Symbols are often used to suggest to the public, in an abbreviated manner, that a word or design is a trade-mark. Some forms of symbols used to identify trade-marks seen in Canada are:
- TM
- MC
If the mark is licensed, a footnote such as “‘Ajax’ is a trade-mark of ABC Limited, used in Canada under controlled licence by XYZ Incorporated” might be included.
Such marking or explanation is highly recommended as it provides additional benefit under the Trade-marks Act such as a presumption of licence and control.
