Dane Smith

Dane is a Patent Agent Trainee and an associate at Sim & McBurney and is active in drafting, filing and prosecuting patent and industrial design applications. He specializes in innovations directed to mechanical, structural and industrial technologies and also has experience in the mobile communications sector.

Dane holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Queen’s University. During his legal education he was a Resident Junior Fellow at Massey College and was actively involved at UofT’s free legal clinic, Downtown Legal Services. While at Queen’s, Dane represented the University at international conferences on improving engineering education and in his thesis project he helped design an amphibious all-terrain vehicle for international competitions.

Dane has experience working with clients of diverse sizes. He spent two years at a world leading multinational engineering firm in their water and wastewater treatment division, where he founded their Young Professionals Group, and has also launched his own start-up company. Dane has a flexible skillset and is quick to understand new technologies and commercial environments, ideally suiting him to securing valuable intellectual property for his clients.

In his recreational time, Dane is an avid volleyball player, paints miniatures and casually engages in online gaming.
