Merger Announcement

Marks & Clerk Canada combines with Toronto’s Sim & McBurney and Sim Ashton & McKay LLP to create a leading Canadian full-service intellectual property business

The partners of Marks & Clerk Canada, part of the Marks & Clerk international intellectual property (IP) group, and Sim & McBurney and Sim Ashton & McKay LLP (“Sim”) today announce that they have agreed to combine their businesses to create a leading Canadian full-service IP business.

After combining, there will be two firms in Canada trading under the Marks & Clerk name – Marks & Clerk Canada, which will continue to provide patent and trademark agency services, and Marks & Clerk Law LLP which will provide legal services in the field of IP, including litigation and commercial law services.

The partners of Marks & Clerk Canada and Sim firmly believe that this merger is an excellent fit in terms of culture and values and presents an outstanding opportunity for further growth.   Due to complete at the start of May, it will:

  • Double Marks & Clerk’s geographic footprint in Canada by adding Sim’s Toronto operations to Marks & Clerk’s Ottawa office;
  • Create an enlarged leading Canadian full service IP business, including the provision of legal services under the Marks & Clerk brand in Canada for the first time;
  • Provide uninterrupted continuity of service to existing clients of both firms, whilst at the same time enabling them to benefit from an enhanced mix of practice specialisms and access to an enlarged international network of 17 locations across Canada, UK, France, Luxembourg, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia and Singapore.
